Learn to sail with the Navy Patuxent Sailing Club! No experience necessary -- our skilled instructors will show you all the basics of sailing, from tying knots to getting out on the water in one of our safe and fun Catalina 16.5 foot sailboats!

*** IMPORTANT ***
Register by selecting one of the Part 1 dates only. The member will then be considered registered for Sessions 2-5, as scheduled on the Event Calendar. Parts 2-5 will remain "temporarily unavailable" to prevent duplicate registrations, but allow members to download a vCal event for their personal calendars.
Cancellation Policy:
Refunds will not be given unless the student cancels at least two weeks prior to the start of class (Session 1).

There will be a $100 reschedule fee for failure to attend class without providing two weeks prior notice of the need to reschedule.

ASA Certification Class 


ASA-101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard

Prerequisites: None

Objective: Be able to sail a boat of about 20 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. A preparatory standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required.

 Boats Sailed: Catalina 16.5K 

 Course Time: Approx. 20 hours + exam

 Cost: $285 (includes 1 year ASA membership fee)

You must be at least 14 years of age to participate in this class; however, per MWR rules, you must be at least 16 to rent a small boat.

For Military E-5 and below: Sail instruction is free, but if wish to obtain an ASA-101 certification, you must pay ASA member fees. Contact Clint Patrick for more information.

The ASA 101 course consists of 2 classroom evenings, 2 on the water days, and the final exam.

 

 Part 1   Classroom  5:00pm – 8:00pm 

 Part 2   Classroom  5:00pm – 8:00pm  

 Part 3   On the Water  8:00am – 4:00pm  A Mate Exam*

 Part 4   On the Water  8:00am – 4:00pm

 Part 5   Written & Practical Exams 8:00am – 5:00pm

 

 * The A-mate exam will be given at the end of Part 3.  Sailing as an A mate is included in the course fee to be used for practice.  See A Mate Rules.

 

Course Flow

 The academic sessions are normally taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  The first on-water instruction (Part 3) occurs that Saturday.

 Students are expected to practice during the week in between instructional periods and the exam session (Between Parts 3 & 4 and 4 & 5).

 As A-mates, students normally practice with each other in West Basin or with an ASA-101 qualified individual.
